What Is A Dental Emergency?
Dental emergencies encompass any urgent dental problems that require immediate intervention to halt bleeding, save a tooth, treat a severe infection, or relieve significant pain. It’s important to recognize that severe infections, including tooth abscesses, may pose life-threatening risks. If you cannot reach us immediately, it is advisable to seek urgent care at the closest medical facility.
Consider it a dental emergency and contact any of our three locations immediately if you experience any of the following:
- A tooth has been knocked out.
- You have a chipped or cracked tooth.
- There is persistent bleeding in your mouth.
- You are experiencing severe pain or significant swelling in your gums, mouth, or jaw.
- You have a toothache accompanied by swelling in your cheeks or face.
- Your jaw has sustained an injury.
- You are dealing with persistent, extreme tooth sensitivity.
- Your tooth is loose or misaligned.
Prompt attention to these issues is critical for effective treatment and can significantly impact the outcome of your dental health.
How Quickly Can I Come In?
Walk-ins are welcome! At Normandy Lake Dentistry, we try our best to fit you in our schedule without much wait. Our goal is to see patients and provide emergency treatment the same day. Dental Emergency Guide
What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?
- Handle the tooth by the crown (top) only, avoiding the root.
- Rinse the tooth gently with water; avoid using soap or scrubbing.
- If feasible, reinsert the tooth into its socket using your fingers to position it and biting down softly to stabilize it.
- If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep the tooth in a container filled with milk.
- Immediately contact your dentist. Prompt action increases the likelihood of successfully reimplanting the tooth.
What if my tooth is loose but not detached?
- Contact any of our three Normandy Lake Dentistry locations immediately to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
- You may attempt to reposition the tooth gently with your fingers; do not apply force.
- We will provide further guidance on steps to take before your appointment.
What if I have a chipped or cracked tooth?
- Contact your dentist immediately. Minor chips can often be smoothed or filled during a regular visit, while a cracked tooth may indicate internal and external damage.
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Take acetaminophen (not aspirin) to manage pain.
- Avoid applying topical pain relievers like Orajel directly onto your gums, as they may harm gum tissue.
For dental emergencies, contacting us quickly can be crucial to your dental health. We are here to assist you at our three Florida locations.
